'Blue Beetle' Animated Series Announced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios

Jaime Reyes’ journey as Blue Beetle may continue in an animated series. Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are developing a series based on the DC Comic character. This potential show would pick up from the 2023 film, which starred Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, who gains superpowers after an alien Scarab fuses with his body.
Miguel Puga, known for Nickelodeon’s The Casagrandes, will serve as showrunner and director, while Cristian Martinez from Good Trouble is writing. The film’s writer, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, and director, Angel Manuel Soto, will be executive producers, along with John Ricard and Galen Vaisman, who were also EPs on the movie. Vaisman will oversee the series project for DC Studios.
Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios declined to comment. Blue Beetle premiered in theaters in August 2023, receiving mostly positive reviews but disappointing box office returns, with a worldwide gross of $130.8 million—the lowest among DC Extended Universe films.
It was the penultimate release under the DCEU umbrella, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom following in December 2023. After James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, Gunn mentioned that Blue Beetle would have a place in the newly rebranded DC Universe.
There’s no confirmation yet on whether Xolo Maridueña or other cast members from the film—including Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Belissa Escobedo, and Harvey Guillén—will reprise their roles in the animated series.
The project currently lacks an outlet, but Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max is a probable destination. Martinez is represented by Gersh and attorney Kim Stenton of Myman Greenspan.
